Dyed of: The Beginnings

Hello!  My name is Anna and I am the creator of Dyed of Natural Causes.  I am excited to create this space to document my work and share my growing knowledge of natural dyes.  I hope this blog becomes an informational guide to help others give natural dye a try!

My obsession with natural dyes began with seeing lichen growing all over the rocks in Moab, Utah.  My family was admiring the beautiful views and I was running around looking at the moss on the ground.  Then I learned that lichen could be used for natural dye became enthralled. That interest drove me to learn about other natural dyes and how to cultivate plants for dye.  Now, I have an organic dye garden to unlock this magical plant power from my backyard.

The process of natural dye is slow and patient.  There is a personal touch to every part of the process.  It is a special connection to the materials, the plants, and to the people that wear my designs. I hope to help others slow down, enjoy the process, and give meaning to their clothing and crafts.

I look forward to sharing my journey with you and I hope that you learn along with me!  This is only the beginning, the sprouting of the seed, and I am excited to see how it grows! Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Pictured above are some of my very first natural dye projects. The first two photos are lichen dye experiments, which were very successful and inspired future collections. The third photo is a solar dye experiment with food waste. I’ll share more on these projects later!
